Obituary for John Robert "Buddy" Upchurch
John Robert “Buddy” Upchurch, 87, of Jacksonville, FL and formerly of East Palatka, FL passed from this life on Monday, January 30, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living in Jacksonville following an extended illness. Born in Thomasville, Georgia, he resided in Putnam County, FL from 1960 -2013 when he moved to Jacksonville. Buddy began studying at Presbyterian College and then left to serve in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War era. After returning, he enrolled at Florida State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Business and served as President of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Buddy worked as chip procurement coordinator with Hudson Pulp & Paper Co. (Georgia Pacific) for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He was of the Methodist faith. In years past, Buddy enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid golfer and member of the Palatka Men’s Golf Association. In later years, he enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and as well as abroad. He also grew in his appreciation for nature and the outdoors and enjoyed any time he could spend there.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Frances “Jill” Upchurch, a brother, Joseph Upchurch and a sister, Ann Upchurch.
Buddy is survived by 2 daughters, Kathie Upchurch of Jacksonville and Ellen Upchurch (Fred Morawitz) of Orange City, a son, Robert Upchurch of Jacksonville, his sister-in-law, Patricia Upchurch of San Antonio, TX, a cousin, Mike Upchurch (Debbie) of Newbern, NC and their 2 children, Diane Felts (Tate) and Michael John “M.J.” Upchurch, nieces, Terry Tuttle Smith, Shan Tuttle Langford and Bonnie Tuttle Minton as well as a nephew, Doug Tuttle.
Services celebrating Buddy’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 3, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Don Hanna officiating. Burial with military honors by the U.S. Air Force will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00.
