Vernon Weeks, 89, of Palatka, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following an extended illness. A native of Granite City, Illinois, Vernon resided in Putnam County for 30 years moving there from Jacksonville. He served as a merchant seaman during World War II. Vernon had worked 20 years as a superintendent over the grounds at the Florida State College at Jacksonville – Kent Campus. He was also a member of Pineland Lodge #86 F&AM and Palatka Moose Lodge #184 where he had been active for 30 years. Vernon enjoyed RVing, his fish aquarium as well as his cats and dogs. He also loved to “tinker” with things at the house.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Amanda Weeks, a son, Terry Weeks, a twin sister, Laverne Weeks and his other sisters, Sybil, Pansy, Thelma and Amanda.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Janice Weeks of Palatka, a son, Bruce Weeks of Keystone Heights, his step-children, Terri Duggins (Mike) of Burlington, KY, Thomas Coward (Carla) of Macclenny and Tracy Wilford (Donald) of Macclenny, 2 grandchildren, Bruce Lee Weeks and Jose Weeks, 9 step-grandchildren, a great-grandson and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services celebrating Vernon’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 12, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Rev. Mark Woods officiating. Palatka Moose Lodge #184 and the U.S. Army will also conduct honors.
