Carl Edward Champion, 75, of Grandin, passed from this life on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville. Born in Statesboro, Georgia, his family moved to Putnam County in the early 1950’s and he attended school in Palatka. Carl has been a long-time resident of the Florahome and Grandin areas. He served 6 years in the Army Reserves. Carl worked 35 years as a lift fork operator/scale man in the paper processing division of Georgia Pacific where he retired in 1999. During this time, he served as President of the United Paper Workers Union. When not working, Carl enjoyed fishing, hunting and cattle ranching. He was a member of the Florahome United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas W. Champion and Marie M. Champion, 4 brothers, Earnest Champion, Walter Champion, Robert Champion and David Champion, 2 step-brothers, T.W. Champion, Jr. and Buford Champion and 2 step-sisters, Janie Conley and Edith Nesmith.
Carl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rose Cook Champion of Grandin, 2 sons, Carl E. Champion, Jr (Diana) of Burlington, NJ and Paul Champion (Vanessa) of Grandin, a brother, Harvey Champion (Anne) of Palatka and 5 grandchildren, Chaise Champion, Chance Champion, Carly Champion, Katryn Champion and Charles Champion.
Services celebrating Carl’s life will be at 3:00 P.M. Friday, August 11, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Louis Tremblay officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 2:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00 P.M.
