Obituary for Pauline L. Joyner
Pauline L. “Polly” Walker DeFord Joyner, 93, of Hastings, Florida, passed peacefully on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Palatka Health Care Center. She was born in Palatka, Florida to Albert Baskin Walker and Evie Lee Fountain Walker on June 25, 1924.
She attended school in Palatka and graduated from Palm Beach High School. She worked as a telephone operator during WWII in Jacksonville, Florida. Polly married Raymond G. DeFord, Sr. in 1946 and following his passing, married Raleigh A. Joyner in 1951. She was a homemaker and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Hastings where she served her church in many capacities including deacon’s wife, working in the nursery, teaching Sunday School, and working with youth groups, including GAs. Polly was loved by all and many of the children she worked with continued to visit her throughout her life.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Aldena Powell (Warren) and Mary DeFord (Kenneth) and a brother, John Walker.
Polly is survived by her son, Raymond DeFord, Jr. (Kathleen); grandchildren, Julie Green (Jerry), Tricia Mathis (Michael), Niki Clemons (David) and Charles Miller; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, sister-in-law, Helen Carter and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palatka with Rev. Charles Johnson officiating. No public visitation is scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church in Hastings, 109 N Main St, Hastings, FL 32145 or a charity of choice.
