Obituary for Francis Lowell Cooley
Francis Lowell Cooley, 85, of San Mateo and formerly of Lake Como, passed from this life on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at home following an extended illness. Born in Graceville, Florida, he resided in Putnam County since 1975 coming from Jacksonville. CPO Francis Lowell Cooley, USN (Ret), was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and over the next 20 years served aboard the USS Eaton, the USS Arlington and was serving aboard the USS McCaffery when he retired as Chief Petty Officer and transferred into the Fleet Reserve.
Following his retirement from the Navy, Francis worked 22 ½ years as a meat inspector with the State of Florida Department of Agriculture. He had been a member of Fleet Reserve Branch #183 in Interlachen. An avid fisherman and football fan, especially of the Florida Gators, Francis also enjoyed gardening.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jewel M. Cooley, 2 sons, Frances L. Cooley, Jr. and Willie Thomas Brown, 2 daughters, Donna Jo Bennett and Wanda Gail Talley, a brother, James Cooley and a sister, Imogene Helms.
Francis is survived by a son, Daniel L. Brown (Candi) of Tampa, 2 daughters, Patricia Ann Underwood of Interlachen and Fran Alford (Steve) of San Mateo, a daughter-in-law, Michelle Cooley of Interlachen, a son-in-law, Randy Bennett of Jacksonville, 2 brothers, John W. Cooley (Mavis) of Madison, Al and Thomas E. Cooley (Barbara) of Douglasville, GA, 11 grandchildren including Kevin A. Cooley who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, stationed in Japan and unable to attend, 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Pastor Dan Holland officiating. Burial with full military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy will follow at Eden Cemetery in Crescent City. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
