Augustus "Buddy" Byrd III
Augustus Bedford "Buddy" Byrd, III, 80, of Palatka, Florida, passed away peacefully
at his home, Saturday, December 2nd, surrounded by family.
Buddy was born in Pachuta, Mississippi in 1937. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee
when he was young, just after World War II. He graduated from Tredwelll High School
in Memphis in 1955 where he played basketball and was a member of the Air Force ROTC.
After high school, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Wheelus Air Force Base in the Kingdom of Lybia.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1959, Buddy moved to Jacksonville,
Florida where he met and married Judith Nichols Byrd, a native of Lake City, Florida. Buddy
and Judy moved to Memphis in l965 where they raised two sons and where Buddy worked for
Delta Air Lines for 27 years until retiring in 1993. After both Buddy and Judy retired, they
Settled in Palatka where Judy passed away in 2001.
Buddy and Cassandra ("Sandi") Ward were married in May 2002. Sandi has three daughters.
Tish Leary (Greg), Sherri Kummer (Duane) and Stephanie Ward and many grandchildren
Buddy was active at Christ Independent Methodist Church where he served as an usher. He also
participated in Ernie Cremer's men's Bible study, which he loved. Buddy enjoyed many
hobbies, in particular old cars and crossword puzzles.
Preceding him in death are his father and mother, Augustus B. (Gus) Byrd and
Winifred Carlene McKinnon Byrd, his two brothers, Edwin Wayne and Bernie B. Byrd
and his sister, Winnie Sue Dawson.
Buddy will be greatly missed by his wife, Sandi Ward Byrd and her family, his sister, Mary Doyle, his two sons, Augustus B. Byrd, IV (Mary), and Austin B. Byrd (Gina), 6 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Rev. Michael Hudson and Bro. Ernie Cremer officiating. Burial will follow in Peniel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services.
