Obituary for Garrett Lee "Gary" Armstrong
Garrett Lee “Gary” Armstrong, 69, of East Palatka, passed from this life on Friday, February 9, 2018 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, he moved from Winter Park in 1967 to attend St. Johns River Junior College. Following his time at St. Johns, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for 2 years during the Vietnam War era aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Palatka and worked several jobs including in the Woodlands Division of Hudson Pulp and Paper Company, as assistant service manager at St. Johns Chevrolet, at Tom Crabtree Tire and Wholesale and then 10 years as service manager at Bainbridge Motors. He retired as Fleet Maintenance Manager with Putnam County following 16 years of service. With his 34 years of experience in both private and public sectors, Gary served on the Florida Sheriff’s Association Fleet Advisory Committee for over 20 years. His early work on the committee was instrumental in the development of the heavy equipment contract in the Cooperative Purchasing Program. His valuable contributions to the committee will greatly missed.
Gary was an avid turkey hunter and member of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation as well as the White Strand Hunting Club in Flagler County. He also enjoyed fishing. Gary was a strong supporter of his daughter’s and grandchildren’s activities over the years and was so proud of them. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Palatka where he was also active in the Methodist Men.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Duncan Armstrong and Mary Jane Holland Armstrong and his daughter, Alicia Armstrong Hawkins.
Gary is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Carolyn Reed Armstrong of East Palatka, a sister, Sue Martino (Roy) of Mobile, AL, 3 grandchildren, Carol Hawkins, Pfc., U.S. Marine Corps, Camp Pendleton, CA, Austin Hawkins of San Mateo and Preston Fields of Satsuma, 2 brothers-in-law, Charles M. Reed, Jr. (Norma) of Jacksonville and Don Reed (Teresa) of St. Augustine, nieces and nephews, Sarah Dingivan (James), Laura Martino, Charles M. Reed, III (Jen), Michael Reed and Candice Tucker and several great-nieces and nephews.
Memorial services celebrating Gary’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor John Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00 A.M.
The family expresses their heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care given to Gary by the doctors, nurses and staff at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.
