Obituary for Owen Marvin Preston
Owen Marvin Preston, 76, of Palatka, passed from this life on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at his home following an extended illness. A native and lifelong resident of Palatka, he was a 1960 graduate of Palatka High School. Owen worked 33 years with Florida Power and Light Corp where he served as risk manager. Following his time with FPL, he worked 6 years with Factory Mutual Insurance Company and then with PDM Bridge. Owen was very involved in the community with several organizations and especially dear to him was the Boys Scout of America. As a scout himself, Owen was an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and was involved with Troop #236 for over 50 years. He also held other various positions within scouting throughout the North Florida Council (Timucua District). Nothing made him more proud over the years than to see other young boys in the troop receive their Eagle Scout award under his leadership. Owen had likewise been involved with the Fire Department, having served as a paramedic and as assistant chief of volunteers for the City of Palatka Fire Department for many years. He also gave back to the community as a volunteer and board member of the American Red Cross for over 20 years. Owen was a member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where he had served on the vestry and as Sr. Warden. There were numerous other boards and organizations that Owen had also been involved with over the years. As a graduate of the University of Florida, Owen was an avid Gator Fan as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Worth Preston and Margaret Kinard Preston.
Owen is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Guthrie Preston, his children, Allan Preston, Cary Preston (Marie), Patricia Lyter (Tim), Robert Preston and Richard Preston, 2 sisters, Leta Clark (Larry “L.E.”) and Margaret Higdon (Thomas), 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and expecting another soon.
Memorial services in celebration of Owen’s life will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Father Robert F. Marsh, Jr. officiating.
