Edith Tilton Herrington passed from this life in the early morning hours of Friday January 4, 2019 at home with family close by.
Born to William Fritchiff Tilton and Evelyn Solana Tilton on November 6, 1921 in San Mateo, Florida. She was a lifelong citizen of Putnam County and moved to Palatka after her marriage. Her heritage was that of a great pioneering family here in this area, The Tiltons.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William Joseph Herrington (Joe); Her parents William Fritchiff and Evelyn Solana Tilton; six brothers: Woody, Samuel(S.J.), Bill, Miller, Jack and Bartola(B.T.) and two sisters: Blanche Tucker and Virginia Smith-Sesco.
She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served a mission in the Southern States Mission at the age of 18. A great lady of faith, during her lifetime she served in many callings including: Ward pianist, music director, Relief Society President and Orlando Temple ordinance worker.
As a dedicated church and family historian and an avid genealogist, she published a history of the Tilton Family. She taught numerous classes on genealogy helping others learn how to research and find their ancestors.
She spent 38 years in the nursing field as a registered nurse and for the majority of her career she worked in the office of Dr. W.W. Weigel as his nurse.
Nothing was more important to her than the gospel of Jesus Christ and her family. She held them dear and kept up with each of them. Her example and dedication to service and her love for her family kept her children, grandchildren and great grandchild close.
She is survived by her 4 children: Evelyn Nelson (Ron), William J. Herrington Jr. (Sherry), Bart (Billie) and Bob (Deb). 14 grandchildren: Adam (Tara), Breanne Morris (Derek), Craig (Mary), David (Kaitlyn), Elyse Sorenson (Eric), Niki Sparks (Bryan), Wendy Nelson, Candy Knight (Jeff), Ron Nelson Jr. (Heather), Christian Kirk Nelson, Rick Nelson, Gary Allman (Renee), Robert “RT” (Natalie), and Charles (Sally). There are 26 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
She will be greatly missed by her family including nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, all who called her Aunt Edith. To those closest to her she was known as “Mother” or “Dag” (shortened from Grandmother by her first grandchild). She lived a full and glorious life and left a wonderful posterity to carry on her legacy of love and service.
Services will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Palatka with President David Bennion presiding and Bishop Michael Curtis conducting. Interment will follow at San Mateo Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5-7 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Edith Herrington was always endearingly Sister Herrington to me. I have so many pleasant memories of her during my growing years in Palatka. There have been countless moments during my entire life that images of her smiling and bright countenance has been calming for me. I feel very grateful to have known Sister Herrington and her children. I feel particular close to Bill and Evelyn. Sending much love to her loved ones. Lavinia Jenkins Moody

During the 1970’s when I first knew Sister Herrington, she was especially kind to me. I had married Lavinia Jenkins, a home town girl who knew and loved her. Before and after I moved away in the early 80’s Sister Herrington was consistently extra considerate to me and convinced me that I was one of her special friends. That was so meaningful to me and helped me through some challenging times and issues. I am eternally grateful for my relationship with her and her many tender expressions to me.
