Obituary

Leta Preston Clark, 75, of Palatka, passed from this life unexpectedly on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at her home from natural causes. A native and lifelong resident of Palatka, she graduated from Palatka High School and from Daytona Beach Community College where she obtained her AA Degree. Leta then began working with her mother at Margaret’s Beauty Shop. In 1976, Leta assumed ownership of the shop and operated as Leta and Company until 2015 when she sold the business. She was still serving customers at the time of her passing. Leta had been involved with the “Look Good – Feel Good” program through the American Cancer Society wherein she had styled hair and provided wigs for women who were going through cancer treatments. For many years she had also donated her time and talent in styling hair for the contestants in the Azalea Festival Beauty Pageant. In younger years, she enjoyed playing golf and had been a member of the Palatka Women’s Golf Association. Some of Leta’s favorite past-times were watching Gator Women’s Softball and Basketball and spending quality time with her family, especially her grandkids. Leta also loved her shop and her many loyal customers over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Worth and Margaret Preston as well as a brother, Owen Preston.
Leta is survived by her husband of 55 years, L.E. Clark of Palatka, a son, Preston Clark (Katrina) and a daughter Gena Young (Jim), all of Palatka, a sister, Margaret Ann Higdon (Thomas) of Raleigh, NC, a sister-in-law, Martha Preston of Palatka, 4 grandchildren, Samantha Clark, Ben Clark, Barrett Clark and Zoey Clark and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Leta’s life will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Father Steven Zehler as officiant. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.
Flowers are gratefully accepted or donations may be sent to the Putnam First Cancer Fund, 600 Zeagler Dr., Palatka, FL 32177.
Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Leta’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com.
Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Leta and I were classmates through grammar and high school, Class of 1962. I still clearly remember a birthday party in Leta’s back patio. We played lots of 45 RPM records. “Flying Purple Eater” was popular and Leta played it until we all knew the words and Gould sing along. When we were Freshmen, Leta was selected as the Freshman Class Representative and was invited to attend the Senior Prom. She needed an escort and I was the lucky guy she asked to accompany her. I bought the first orchid I had actually seen and slipped it on her wrist before, embarrassingly, my mother drove us to the dance. Our Senior Year Book was named Maroon Memories, and we all certainly made many, many great ones! Fond farewell to a wonderful lady.

Leta was the person who always greeted you with a smile. I always felt better after talking with Leta. She had that knack of making life more enjoyable and will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known her.
