John Joseph Mathe, Sr, 91, of Interlachen, passed from this life on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following an extended illness. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Joseph Mathe and Catherine Berendt Mathe, John worked as a merchant marine for 1½ years and served honorably in the U.S. Navy in World War II from 1945-1949. He resided in Jacksonville from 1947 – 1964. After moving his family to Interlachen in 1964 he continued working in the civil service division as an aviation electrician at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville until retiring in 1979. John was a very dedicated member of St. John Catholic Church Interlachen and Cursillios in Christianity. He was also active member of the Knights of Columbus since 1953 and twice served as Grand Knight. He was a member of American Legion Post #293 and the Lions Club of Interlachen where he served as President in 1987. In earlier years, John had been an avid golfer and was a member of the Palatka Men’s Golf Association and Gator Senior Golf Association. While residing in Jacksonville, he was a parishioner of Assumption Catholic Church and served as president of the Holy Name Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Wonicker Mathe, a brother, Donald Mathe and 2 sisters, Audrey Ceelen and Irene Pocquette.
John is survived by his children, Thena “Cathe” Mathe and Anna Johns, both of Palatka, John J. Mathe, Jr. (Pegi) of Interlachen, Maria Mathe-Bergh (John) of Round Rock, TX and Liam Mathe (Suzanne) of Bell, 2 brothers, Clifford Mathe (Joy) of Fond du Lac, WI and Joseph Mathe (Rose) of Oshkosh, WI, 4 grandchildren, Renee Unsworth (Shawn), Desiree Wright, Chris Flowers, Kara Mathe (Robbie Comstock) and 9 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at St. John Catholic Church Interlachen on Thursday from 10:00 A.M until 10:50 A.M., Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. with Father Pablo Fuentes, Father Michael Williams, Father Amar Nagothu, Father Tom Walsh and Father Ron Camarda as officiants. Interment will follow at the Mathe-Berkelmann family cemetery with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. A reception will follow approximately 1:00 P.M. at the church hall.
