Obituary

Michelle Philips, 62, of East Palatka, FL, passed from this life on July 14, 2019. She was born on May 27, 1957, at Mary Lawson Hospital of Palatka and has been a lifelong resident of Putnam County. Michelle grew up along the St. John’s River on property that has been in the family for 100 years. She has always been drawn to our beautiful Florida waterways, whether it was watching the sunset, shelling, or observing wildlife on Sanibel and Crescent Beach. Michelle also enjoyed horseback riding on the family farm in Interlachen and nurturing her gardens. She had a great love for her beautiful grandchildren. She found much joy and solace in her relationship with the Lord, and she loved her prayer and worship time.
We celebrate Michelle’s life and embrace all the love she shared, care she had given, and beautiful memories she created. We rejoice that she is at peace, and our beautiful “Shell” is celebrating in heaven.
She was preceded in death by her parents, “Sonny” and Elizabeth Philips.
Michelle is survived by her two children, Robin Ziegler (David “Zig”) of Palatka and Mason Wells (Mollie) of East Palatka, her sister, Laura Smith (Danny) of Dalton, GA, her brother, Clay Philips (Tedra) of Crescent Beach. Her grandchildren are Cole, Riley, Kyla, and Scout Ziegler and Paisley and Penelope Wells. Her nephews are Landon (Morgan) and Lane Smith, and Cade and Trevor Philips.
Memorial services celebrating Michelle’s life will be Friday, July 19 at 4 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Haven-Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177 in memory of Michelle Philips.
Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Michelle’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffuenrals.com .
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Michelle was one of my oldest friends – from the early years when we moved from Jacksonville to East Palatka. I have great memories of my youth spent with Michelle and her family. Honed my driving skills on the Philips property in East Palatka during the 1970’s with Michelle, Dana, and Laura. (Laura – rabbits do not lay eggs) (Laura – look out there’s a tree). A day of driving around in circles in the station wagon was great fun for a 15 year old girl.
Nicknames: “gearshift” and “clutch”. We would take the car out on the road and take turns driving. The person driving worked the clutch, the person in the passenger seat worked the gearshift. We got really good at that.
Clay would usually be waiting for me, in the bushes, so he could pummel me with grapefruits (ouch), when I went to visit. Elizabeth would finally open the front door of the house and let me in and Laura would be waiting with hairbrush in hand and chase us through the house (ouch) – how dare Michelle and I go in her room without permission!
Percy gave me my very first job - counting live worms into bait cups with Michelle. We would sit under one of the beautiful oak trees on the family property in a circle around that pile of worms and talk for hours.
Michelle and her family took me to Sanibel many times. Shell and I had just recently discussed getting chased by sand sharks during one of the trips. A story people here in Texas have a hard time believing.
One of my favorite memories of my Michelle is in the living room of her home, dressed in a suede fringe vest, dancing to In A Gadda Da Vida by Iron Butterfly. She could “bust a move”.
I’m sure going to miss you and your letters. I love you Michelle.
