I met Terry playing American Legion baseball. He would lead off and I would intentionally hit him with a fastball that hurt. He would throw his bat down and sprint to first base, all the while staring at me I could hear the rest of the team say 'ole ____".Royce is wild tonight. After I returned from college I was asked by Gene Swindle and Bernie Swedler if I wanted to play softball and I said sure. When I arrived, there was Terry Railing and he was eye balling me again. He said I used to hate you Royce and said I hated you also Terry. He asked why I would throw at his head and hit him every time he led off. I responded, If I pitched to you, you would hit a line drive to right center field and start the game standing on third base. I could not allow that to happen. I would strike out the rest of the team and always won. Terry and I lived in the same apartment complex, he cut the grass which paid the rent, we fished and ate fish everyday, along with our Golden Friend Ron Green. Our softball team was called the
Dirt Bags' and man could we play. They threw us out of every league we played in because we beat every body. We played in some tournaments and one comes to mind when Terry came late and was all boogered up, drunk as a mojo. The game was close, and Coach Bernie put Terry in at third base. The other team was coming back and the winning run was coming around third base, Terry stuck out his foot and this big Cuban boy fell face first, I got the cut off throw and threw back to Terry and he tagged the runner out. ALL HECK BROKE LOOSE! When we finally resumed play in the last inning Rails came to bat with the bases loaded and hit one over a pump house in left field probably 500 feet away. We won the game and Tournament. We became very close friends and have stayed connected for over 45 years. I will miss my good friend Terry Railing. I will see you soon Rails!
