Edith Marie Harkey, 94, of Palatka, passed from this life on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness. She was a native of Monroe, North Carolina and lived in Daytona for 2 years before moving to Putnam County in 1947. Edith was an active member of First Baptist Church of Palatka where she had worked as the Financial Secretary from 1962-1987, was the Pastor Administrative Assistant and began the grief ministry. She also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity as well as Haven Hospice. Edith enjoyed spending time with her family and always found time for her grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Harkey, Jr., parents, J. Walter and Marie Helms, and siblings, Dempster Helms, Heath Helms, Edwin Helms and Alease Broome.
She is survived by her sons, Lee Harkey (Sandy) of Port St. Lucie and Vernon Harkey (Rebecca) of Palatka, brother, Sib Helms of Monroe, NC, grandchildren, Jason Harkey, Allison Williams (John) and Bethany Harkey, great-grandchildren, Cade Harkey, Teagan Harkey, Caroline Williams and Della Williams, nephews, Robert L. “Bud” Nearing of San Mateo and Charles David Hill (Gail) of Huntersville, NC as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Dr. Vernon Harkey, Pastor Eddie Parcher and Dr. James Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until time of services.
