Obituary

James Benjamin “Jimmy” Thomas, 86, of Palatka, passed from this life at his home on Sunday, December 29, 2019 with his family by his side. Born in LaBelle, Florida to James Benjamin Thomas, Sr. and Myrtice Lowery Thomas, he moved to Putnam County in 1986 from Immokalee. He had also lived 5 years in Cumming, Georgia. Growing up in rural Hendry County, Jimmy left school early to help support his family and began working in ranching at a young age. He summoned up his life in a published book he entitled, “Florida Cowboy”, a true Florida Cracker’s Story. He had also worked in Lawn Maintenance and for 15 years served as the Lawn Maintenance Supervisor for the CSX Conference Center here in Putnam County. Jimmy likewise served honorably in the U.S. Army. Of the Baptist faith, Jimmy led a very spiritual life and was a dedicated family man and example to not only his family but anyone he came in contact with. As a part of his spiritual devotion, he enjoyed participating in a prayer group with Ernie Cremer. Jimmy was also an avid Florida Gators and Miami Dolphins fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Harold Thomas, Wayne Thomas, Ray Thomas, Kenneth Thomas and Dale Thomas.
Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Thomas of Palatka, a son, Clint Thomas (Gretchen) of Satsuma, 3 daughters, Kim Price (Barry) of Atlanta, Kathryn Ayala (Armando) of LaBelle, Krista Haltiwanger (Mark) of Palatka, a brother, Gene Thomas (Carolyn) of Okeechobee, 4 sisters, Sylvia Chancey of Live Oak, Jackie Wells of Keystone Heights, Glenda Russell of Clermont and Kay Holton of Ocala, 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Services honoring Jimmy’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Bro. Buddy Lynch and pastors Tim Hall and Shaun Thomas officiating. The U.S. Army will also conduct military honors. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00.
Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Jimmy’s Book of Memories page at www.johnsonoverturffunerals.com.
Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

Gene absolutely adored Jimmy. To me, Jimmy was an example of true family values, good husband, father, brother and friend. His love for God was shown in his actions and testimony. I know without a doubt he will be waiting with all the loved ones to meet and greet all of us. Until we meet again brother Jimmy. Love, Gene and Carolyn

I only had the chance to meet Jimmy once, when his sweet daughter Kim invited me to go with her to her home in Immokalee. I will always remember the warm welcome he & the entire Thomas family gave me. May he rest in peace. My sincere condolences.
