James Benjamin “Jimmy” Thomas, 86, of Palatka, passed from this life at his home on Sunday, December 29, 2019 with his family by his side. Born in LaBelle, Florida to James Benjamin Thomas, Sr. and Myrtice Lowery Thomas, he moved to Putnam County in 1986 from Immokalee. He had also lived 5 years in Cumming, Georgia. Growing up in rural Hendry County, Jimmy left school early to help support his family and began working in ranching at a young age. He summoned up his life in a published book he entitled, “Florida Cowboy”, a true Florida Cracker’s Story. He had also worked in Lawn Maintenance and for 15 years served as the Lawn Maintenance Supervisor for the CSX Conference Center here in Putnam County. Jimmy likewise served honorably in the U.S. Army. Of the Baptist faith, Jimmy led a very spiritual life and was a dedicated family man and example to not only his family but anyone he came in contact with. As a part of his spiritual devotion, he enjoyed participating in a prayer group with Ernie Cremer. Jimmy was also an avid Florida Gators and Miami Dolphins fan.
