Daniel (Dan) Phillips entered into eternal life on Friday, January 10, 2020. Dan was born on March 21, 1949 in Eustis, Florida. He attended elementary school in Palatka and graduated from Hastings High School in 1967. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968 and served nine years, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant before his Honorable Discharge in 1977.
Dan was diagnosed with lung cancer early in the Spring of 2019. He received the most excellent care from the Malcolm Randall North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Administration in Gainesville and the Palatka Outpatient clinic since his diagnosis.
Dan’s work career had him working in paper mills throughout the U.S., including here in Palatka at the Hudson Pulp & Paper Company and the current Georgia Pacific Operations. During his secular career, Dan also served his local church as a Sunday School teacher, a Deacon, Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor. Dan had opportunity to supply the pulpit in churches in Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Alabama.
“It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to have known many wonderful leaders, educators, pastors and gentlemen in the Palatka/Putnam County area: C.L. Overturf, Jr. former Dean of St. Johns River Junior College and currently the minister of College Road Church of Christ in Palatka; the late Bill Wing, Founding Pastor of Dunns Creek Baptist Church; the late Cecil Underwood of Palatka, Florida; the late Rev. Robert “Buddy” Hogarth of Palatka,FL; Jason Sharp, Senior Pastor of Francis Baptist Church; Captain Tobby Williams, Palatka Police Athletic League and of the Palatka Police Dept. Command Staff; the late O.B. Hendrix, former Principal, Husson Avenue Junior High in Palatka, FL; the late William M. “Bill” Thomas (when at the St. Johns River Junior College) of Palatka, FL; Miss Nettie Ruth Brown, retired Home Demonstration Agent for St. Johns County, FL; the late Paul Dinkins, former County Extension Agent for St. Johns County, FL and Ray Deford of Hastings, FL.
To paraphrase Bill Wing, “I am a better person for having known and had these people in my life.”
Dan is survived by his wife, the former Mary C. Nagel of Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter, Janice of Regina, SK, Canada, two grandsons, Danny and Adri both of Regina, SK, Canada, a brother, David of Rochester, NY, a brother, Dennis of Titusville, FL, a sister, Anita, of Jacksonville, FL and absolutely the best group of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel Clifford of Florence, SC.
Dan had elected to forego a local service with a committal service at the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Daniel’s Book of Memories page at
Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka.

I knew Dan as an extraordinary person, a humble Christian pastor, and a gentle Christian soul. I know I'll sure miss him but am equally sure that while his body may be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Dan is rejoicing with the saints that have gone before, resting in the arms of Jesus.
Father Bob Marsh, St Mark's, Palatka.

To the Phillips family-David, Dennis, Anita, his wife Mary, their daughter and grandchildren, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences. I was sad to hear that Danny had passed away, but happy in our assurance that his new home is with our Lord and Savior in Heaven. I have known Danny and his brothers and sister since they came to Hastings and have fond memories of their friendship in school and church. Danny was a good man and will be missed.

To the family, my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Please find comfort in the knowledge that soon God will wipe out every tear from our eyes, and “death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”(Rev. 21:3,4) May this promise give you comfort now and a real hope for the future. My deepest sympathies.

The first time I met Danny was Christmas 1972 I think. He wanted to do a big surprise for his parents by showing up at church in his dress uniform. I don’t think he realized it also meant staying up late assembling a swing set for his niece. Our paths crossed few times in the following years, but he always had a smile and lots of conversation. He shared genealogy info with me when I started researching and I was amazed at all he and Mary had discovered and who they had talked to. I am so sorry that he is gone too soon. Thinking of all of you.
