William Harold “Bill” Wing, 84, of Palatka, passed from this life into eternity on Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Fairhope Hospice – Pickering House in Lancaster, Ohio. Born in Lyons, Georgia to Walter L. Wing and Flora Bell Thompson Wing, he resided in Palatka since 1977 moving there from Gillisonville, South Carolina. Bill served 13 ½ years in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1967, he was ordained into the ministry. In 1971 he received his bachelor’s degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Jacksonville, FL. Over the years, Bill pastored numerous churches including Springfield Baptist Church, South Thompson Baptist Church in Lyons, GA, King Memorial Baptist Church in Brantley Co., GA, Gillisonville Baptist Church, Gillisonville, SC. Bill was called to be the founding pastor of Dunns Creek Baptist Church in San Mateo (a mission of Peniel Baptist Church). Upon his retirement from Dunns Creek Baptist, Bill and his wife Laverne were active members of Peniel Baptist Church where he taught a Bible Study class. He was likewise a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and American Legion Post #45 in Palatka. In his leisure time, Bill enjoyed fishing and his love of studying the Scriptures.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 62 years, Laverne Wing, a daughter, Kelly Diane Wing and a sister, Dorothy Phillips.
Bill is survived by 2 sons, Daniel Harold Wing (Lisa) of Shawnee, OH and William Michael Wing of Satsuma, a brother, W.L. Wing of Panama City, 3 grandchildren, Mandy Morris, Daniel Jr. and Kimberly as well as 4 great-grandchildren.
Services celebrating Bill’s homegoing will be at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Peniel Baptist Church with Pastors Dannie Williams, Benny Reynolds and Asa Greear officiating. Interment and military honors by the U.S. Navy will follow at Peniel Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka and Saturday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services at 11:00.
